Bandera, Texas. Bandera is fifty miles northwest of San Antonio in east central Bandera County. Bandera was named county seat when the county was formed in 1856. The town and county were named for nearby Bandera Pass. The founders formed a partnership in 1853 to build a town and water-powered lumber mill. Three years later Bandera was born.
Despite the age of the prints, if the water is low, dinosaur footprints may be seen in the solid limestone bed of Hondo Creek at the west edge of the highway. Impressions of toes and even claws are evident, through somewhat blurred.
Rancher’s pride and originality in creating striking entrances to their property is evident in the ranch gates that edge the highway. Throughout the Hill Country Trail, traveler will often see deer fences--large-mesh wire 8 or 9 feet high. Their purpose may be either to keep deer out of the gardens and orchards, or to contain them within a lease hunting area.
History abounds in the town and the area. The intriguing St. Stanislaus Catholic Church serves a Polish parish that dates from 1855. Nearby Medina Lake is a popular spot for water sports. A feast of magnificent Hill Country scenery unfolds between Bandera and Utopia. These landscapes result from the typical dramatic dissection of the Edwards Plateau into prominent hills and narrow valleys.
In a town that feels true to its Western roots, you can find numerous guest ranches. Trail rides and campfire cookouts are available. Other activities include: swimming, hunting for deer and wild turkey, camping, hiking, and rodeos.
