Lytle, Texas. Lytle Texas, named for John T. Lytle, was established in the 1860s and is located 25 miles southwest of San Antonio. According to the 2000 census the town had a population of 2383. It has grown considerably in the four years since then to over 5,000 in the area.
In 1884, Lytle had a population of fifty. Despite there small size they still were able to have all of the following: a union church, a district school, a hotel, and a physician. By 1892 the community had grown to a population of 100, which included: four general stores, a gin, two livestock breeders, and a Methodist church. In the late 1890s coal mining became a major factor in the growth of the economy and with that, the area continued to grow.
Recreation in Lytle is plentiful, both locally and nearby. The City Park offers three baseball fields, a multi-purpose court, playground equipment, and plenty of picnic facilities and tennis courts. San Antonio is nearby as well and has much to offer with its many interesting sights, shopping centers, theatres, and miscellaneous amusements.
