Sisterdale, Texas. Sisterdale Texas is located thirteen miles north of Boerne in north central Kendall County. The town was founded in 1847 by Nicolaus Zink, a German freethinker who surveyed New Braunfels for Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels. This community in the idyllic valley of Sister Creek became one of the famous "Latin Settlements" as Zink was joined over the next two years by Forty-Eighters fleeing after the aborted 1848 revolution in Europe.
Sisterdale opened a post office in 1851. The community was one of the centers of German abolitionism and Unionism before and during the Civil War. After the conflict it became a quiet Hill Country of farmers, with a population estimated at 150 in 1884. At that time the town had a shingle mill, a cotton gin, and a grocery store.
The community supported two businesses between 1931 and 1980, when the number rose to four. In the mid-1980s local sources estimated the population at just under 100. In 1990 it was reported as sixty and today the population has risen somewhat. The area remains active in the community and strong in the sense of small town appeal.
